The Oak Canyon Astronomy Group organizes a monthly star party in Oak Park, CA.
The site itself is a decent size parking lot surrounded by grass fields. There is plenty of space for everyone. Many amateur astronomers show up with their equipment and it’s not uncommon to see 15+ telescopes lined up. From 4″ to 24″ telescopes, levels ranging from newbies to wizards and knowledge in astrophotography or visual, everyone is friendly and willing to help or answer questions.
The Oak Canyon Astronomy Group welcomes everyone during star parties, access is free! (Just remember to turn off your headlights if you come after dark and bring a RED flashlight)

Sometimes we’re too busy to chitchat. Even if we do our best to arrive and set up before dusk, we sometimes have to rush. Dusk is very important, especially in astrophotography, and offers limited time to calibrate the equipment. It’s the last bit of sunlight we get and even if we function perfectly at night, it’s much easier to set up under the sun’s light. During this time, amateur astronomers are busy aligning, taking calibration frames… so that you can enjoy the night sky when it’s really dark.
